Plan for Success

Advanced FACS “Plan for Success” and Grading System

Pari Flake, Kitchen Director

2013-2014

Welcome to Advanced FACS!  Snowflake Jr. High has a wonderful opportunity to teach the art of cooking.  There will be lots of opportunities for students to improve on their culinary talents.  The grading policies as well as my expectations are as follows:

Materials for Class:

  • Each student will need to bring back their recipe binder.  Their recipe book will be kept here.  We will work on this throughout the school year and it will be turned in as their final project.  They will leave my class at the end of the school year with over 75 tried and true recipes.

  • Girls with longer hair will need to bring in ponytails.  (You can get 36 for $1 at Dollar Tree)

  • In January students will be asked to bring fabric for a sewing project.

Grades

Daily Participation – 25 points per day

Each student starts each day with full points.  To keep all of your points you MUST:

  1. be on time for class,

  2. be ready to learn, participate, work together,

  3. stay on task.

Excessive talking, doing other homework, or refusing to participate, and use of a cell phone are sure ways to lose ALL participation points for the day.  Besides, it makes me pretty grumpy as well. J

OR

Cooking Projects – 100 points

  • Since cooking is performance driven, students will need to be in attendance in order to receive a grade.  The projects will show learning and growth.  Besides, cooking is a lot of fun!

Benchmark Testing and Formal Assessments

I will give benchmark tests worth 100 points throughout the year. They will also take mini assessments to check for understanding.

Absences and Tardies

Students will automatically lose 10 points for being tardy.   The points for absences will need to be made up if the student is concerned about their grade.  Absences are difficult to make up because it is hard to make up for missed cooking time.  However, a student can make the project at home and turn in a sheet on how it went with a parent’s signature.  If a test or quiz is missed, the student will also need to make that up, even with a school-excused absence.  It is the students’ responsibility to find out what they missed and what needs to be done to make it up.  If it isn’t made up in a timely manner, the student will receive a zero for that test.

Classroom Rules

  1. No candy, food, or beverages in class.

  2. WHEN THE BELL RINGS, you should be in your chair, ready to learn. A lot of time is wasted when everyone is wandering around the room.

  3. When I am talking, you listen.  If you have a question, raise your hand.  Otherwise, let’s cook!!!!

If you have any questions, please feel free to call me.
